Deepen
Life makes no sense If this is all it is: making money, making love, Making idols, and making a name for ourselves. Yet life is more than all these: Righteousness through the one man, Jesus Christ, God’s pleasure and will for all human life.
In bringing our lives up To the light of His righteousness, We see our affluence is but utter poverty, Our successes are nothing but failures, Our humanity is mere purposelessness, And our denied inner need torments our souls, For refusing God’s call on our lives.
In denial we have no good judgment Or coherence in our broken-up world, Where personalities are fragmented, And in ruins our dignities are dissolved in waters of indifference, As wars emerge out of people’s internal confusions, Generating intense dislike for one another, Thus revealing the distortions of our emotions and desires.
Because our lives are messy, Enthralled and impressed by the world of sin, Tomorrow is so frightening, even imprisoning, As today reflects on us a separation Of our broken trust with our maker, Amputating a vital part of our existence: His will and pleasure he intends us to have, Most of all…life in abundance.
And there is hope for us all, An amazing generosity of God toward everyone, Motivating us by truth, energizing us by His Spirit, To open before us the great expression of power, As we expose our true selves to His love, Our weaknesses, our helplessness Challenging us to do something humanly impossible.
We need today to start building new habits, Take apart our shallow ways of thinking And let God help us to establish godly attitudes: to Love Him more than formerly, not less, Deep under the surface of our visible lives To hold our heads up, a little higher, a little straighter, Deepen…as much access to forgiveness as we have.
